Advice on Mopping

Yes, there is a right way to mop. Before you put anything wet on your floor, sweep!  That’s right. Sweep. There is no point in mopping a floor with loose dirt and grime because then all you’ll be doing is rearranging the dirt into a wet mess. If you’d rather not sweep, you can use a vacuum made specifically for your floor type. The point is to be sure to remove all loose dirty before mopping.

Also, make sure you are using the correct cleaning product for your floor type. Keep in mind when it comes to water on floors, typically less is best. Quick tips on choosing the right cleaner:

Hardwood:  if sealed with polyurethane, you want to use a mild soap and water; if waxed, use a slightly damp, almost dry mop to keep floors from warping.

Laminate:  never use commercial cleaner with harsh chemicals; you want to damp mop and spot clean.

Vinyl:  try a solution of apple cider vinegar and water – works wonders at cleaning and disinfects, as well.
Linoleum:  use a mild cleaner for the type of floor – a few drops of mild dish soap and water into a spray bottle, spritz the floor in relatively small sections at a time; go over the floor with clean water.

Stone tile:  use a commercial cleaner made specifically for stone and avoid bleach, vinegar and ammonia.

Ceramic tile:  white vinegar and water should do the trick here.
